There are certainly several innovative features packed in to car alarms presently available on the market. Each brand has a more sinister name than the other which conjures up images of thieves being nabbed thanks to the shrieking sounds of alarms as they warn of intrusions. However, one should check out if there are ways of getting around car alarms. This is because thieves are clever enough to follow innovations and find out how to beat the system.

There is no denying the fact that almost one in every four cars has a car alarm thanks to state laws that mandate insurance discounts for those car owners that have alarms in their vehicles. The common perception most car owners have is that the car alarm will deter would-be-thieves. This may not always hold true as there are ways to get around car alarms. Even when they do sound off, they are, in the great majority of cases, probably false alarms.

Tricks of the Trade

It is known for a fact that car alarms are ineffective in combating car thieves who know all the tricks of getting around car alarms. It is believed that as many as 80 per cent of the nation’s car thefts that total an estimated $7 billion dollars occur in spite of car alarms. Such alarms may only be an inconvenience to car thieves – they may slow them down, but may not prevent thefts.

Even manufacturers, installers as well as insurers and criminologists admit that the car alarm is not too effective and may not provide any tangible benefits. This may be due to the fact that mostly car alarms are triggered when no break in occurs. As they are all too often accidentally triggered, most people do not pay any attention to the car alarm sounding off. This is one way that thieves get around car alarms, secure in the knowledge that the owner probably will pass it off to an accidental alarm triggered off by a stray cat!

With car theft becoming more sophisticated, gone are the days of it being a juvenile crime. With more sophisticated means being employed, getting around car alarms can take the form of smashing car windows and yanking wires that can result in deactivation of the car alarm. Statistics show that eight out of ten car thieves are able to make off with cars that do have alarms installed.

Car Alarms a Relic?

The bottom line is that with newer technologies emerging, the car alarm has become a relic of the past. Instead brake locks, personal car alarm pagers and GPS tracking are a lot more effective in dealing with car thieves.
